Snow Removal Costs in Cambridge (2026-27 Season)
Planning ranges for snow removal in Cambridge for the 2026-27 season, and a plain account of why a lot and a hill are priced the way they are.
Snow pricing is built on hours, and the hours go three places: travelling between properties, clearing them, and hand work. A lot is priced on the first two and a sidewalk route on the third. A sloped driveway in Galt takes longer than a flat one of the same size because it is cleared in one direction, often finished by hand at the foot, and needs ice control there. Route density matters everywhere: a drive on a street where six neighbours are already under contract is cheaper to add than one alone on its hill, and autumn booking is cheaper because routes are built from the contracts in hand.
Planning ranges for 2026-27
These are typical figures across Waterloo Region, offered for planning and nothing more; each lot and driveway is quoted in writing after it has been walked.
- Seasonal residential contract, flat single driveway with walk: commonly $400 to $650 for the season, without salting.
- Seasonal residential contract, flat double driveway with walk: commonly $500 to $850 for the season, without salting.
- Sloped driveway premium: commonly 15 to 40 per cent above the equivalent flat drive, depending on grade and hand finishing, with foot-of-drive ice control recommended on top.
- Salting or ice-control add-on: commonly $100 to $300 for the season depending on area and whether a slope is involved.
- Sidewalk service for property managers: commonly $250 to $450 per frontage for the season including ice control, less per address when clustered; entrances and walks extra.
- Per-visit driveway clearing: commonly $45 to $120 per visit by size, grade and depth, with a minimum charge.
- Industrial and plaza lots: quoted per site from a scope and stacking plan. Small plazas and single units are sometimes in the low thousands for a season; mid-sized industrial lots run well beyond that and depend entirely on area, dock and lane priority, hauling and ice-control frequency.
What moves the price
- Grade. Slope adds time, hand finishing and ice control.
- Hand work. Sidewalks, walks, steps, entrances and dock stairs are shovel or small blower work.
- Stacking room and hauling. A lot or drive with nowhere to put snow means carrying it further or paying to haul it.
- Route density. How many nearby properties are already under contract.
- Ice control. Product and visits between storms, at a stated rate on lots.
- Timing requirements. A lot that must be sequenced around shifts and trucks costs more than one that is empty overnight. A fixed completion hour is not sold at any price.
- Surface. Interlock and stamped concrete need a protected blade edge.
What a quote should state
The trigger depth, exactly what is cleared and in what order, whether the City plow windrow is included, how ice control is applied and at what rate, the season dates, where snow is stacked, when hauling is triggered and at whose cost, and what the contractor's insurance covers. A price without those details is not comparable to one with them, and a quote promising a completion hour in any weather should be read with suspicion rather than relief.
Frequently asked questions
How much is a seasonal driveway contract in Cambridge?
As a planning range, a flat single drive with walk is commonly $400 to $650 for the season and a flat double $500 to $850, without salting. A sloped drive commonly carries a 15 to 40 per cent premium plus ice control at the foot. The real number follows a look at the property.
Why is a hill more expensive?
It takes longer, it is cleared in one direction toward a stacking point the grade dictates, it is often finished by hand at the bottom, and the foot needs ice control because the meltwater refreezes there. The alternative, a quick pass that leaves a thin layer on a slope, is dangerous and not offered.
What does an industrial lot cost to plow for the season?
It is quoted per site from a written scope. The variables are area, dock and lane priority, whether the lot is empty overnight or runs around the clock, when snow has to be hauled, and the ice-control frequency and rate. There is no honest per-square-metre figure.
Do I pay up front?
Seasonal residential contracts are typically paid before the season or in two instalments. Commercial lots are usually invoiced monthly across the season. Per-visit work is invoiced after. The agreement states the terms.
What happens to the seasonal price if it barely snows?
Nothing, in either direction. The fee buys the property a place on the route from the first snowfall to the last, and a quiet winter costs the same as a punishing one. Anyone who would rather pay by the storm should take on-call pricing instead.
Is the site visit free?
Yes, and so is the written quote. What is not offered is a seasonal price over the phone for a lot or a driveway nobody has walked, since the grade, the hand work and the stacking room are what the number is made of.
